Frequently Asked Questions
Every day is a new day with our bodies. What works one day may not work the next and vice versa. So even if we've been practicing yoga - or some other form of exercise - for years, I hope you will continue to explore and ask questions about your practice. It's how we learn what to do and, more importantly, what NOT to do. I don't have all the answers, but if you have questions, please let me know before or after class or contact me via phone or email. If I don't have the answer, I'll find it.

What is "body awareness?"
In a nutshell, body awareness is the ability to perceive and comprehend the position, movement, and sensations of your body. Balance plays a key role in enhancing body awareness.

What role does body awareness play in my yoga practice?
Body awareness helps you stay more present in your practice by allowing you to focus on both your breath and the movements of your body. It is also crucial for pushing your limits safely and preventing injuries.

I have a high pain threshold. Is this a good thing?
First, it's great if you know you have a high pain threshold, because your brain may not utilize the same alarm systems as someone with a low pain threshold. To avoid injury, you may have to be extra mindful about pain versus discomfort and not pushing your body too far.

What's the difference between pain and discomfort?
Pain is often more intense and localized whereas discomfort may be less severe and more irritating. Each person has different thresholds, and it's important for you to understand what your body is telling you. When in doubt, please talk to your healthcare professional.

Why is yoga practiced in bare feet?
Yoga is typically practiced barefoot to boost body awareness (there's that term again!), improve balance, and strengthen the feet, while also fostering a stronger connection to both the ground and the practice. People often wear socks and more layers during Yin practices, such as Yin Yoga and Restorative Yoga, that are slower and more restful.

Should I practice yoga poses at home before class so I don't look foolish?
Absolutely not! First of all, Mountain Yoga classes are designed to meet YOU where you are at any given time. Everybody is different. Every BODY is different. We utilize lots of props and modifications to meet you wherever you are.
